Job outlook for management careers

For administrative services and facilities managers (one of the most common careers ¹ú²ú͵ÅÄ alumni pursue with this degree), employment is projected to grow 6 percent from 2019 to 2029, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

General and operations managers are responsible for managing activities that are part of the production of services in wide-ranging fields from social media to election campaigns. Operations managers' responsibilities include human resource management, asset management, and cost management. Their indirect responsibilities can include interacting with the managers in other functional areas within the organization whose roles have an impact on operations.

  • Emphasizing performance improvement and operations strategy
  • Open communication with staff and constituents
  • Innovative thinking for improvement of programs and strategies

Administrative Services and Facilities Managers 

2020 Median annual salary: $98,890

Administrative services and facilities managers plan, direct, and coordinate activities that help an organization run efficiently. The specific responsibilities vary, but these managers typically maintain facilities and supervise activities that include recordkeeping, mail distribution, and office upkeep. In a small organization, they may direct all support services and may be called the business office manager. Large organizations may have several layers of administrative managers who specialize in different areas.

Necessary attributes and skills:

  • Supervise clerical and administrative staff
  • Set goals and deadlines for their department
  • Develop, manage, and monitor records
  • Recommend changes to policies or procedures in order to improve operations, such as reassessing supplies or recordkeeping
  • Monitor facilities to make sure that they remain safe, secure, and well maintained
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, and electrical and mechanical systems
  • Make sure that facilities meet environmental, health, and security standards and comply with regulations

Management Consultants and Business Analysts

Management consultants and business analysts recommend ways to improve an organization’s or product’s efficiency. They work one-on-one with an organization offering advice and guidance to encourage growth and long-term solutions when it comes to methods, equipment, revenue, expenditure, and employment reports.
